TEE #001 What NOT to do when niching on Etsy
Mar 25, 2023Read time: 4 minutes
My first Etsy store was a disaster (not that I knew it at the time!)
Listing everything that I could possible make with my newly acquired Cricut. Inspired by all the Tiktok's and YouTube videos I had been consuming I knew something would sell...surely!
Wrong....my Etsy store was confusing. It looked pretty but it wasn't screaming I am excellent at 'Personalised Wall Art'. Instead it was mumbling I am pretty good at using my new toy (lol)!
Luckily I figured out what was going wrong relatively quickly and focused on one niche, personalised wall art. Within days that made a huge difference on how my Etsy store was ranking which means I started to get regular sales and my phone was 'Ca Ching' ing away quite happily.
While choosing the right niche is key to succeeding on Etsy, there are certain mistakes that can hinder your progress. Here are three things NOT to do when niching on Etsy:
1. Don't choose a niche that is too broad or competitive
While it may be tempting to choose a niche with a large potential customer base, opting for a broad or highly competitive niche can make it difficult to stand out in the marketplace. Instead, consider focusing on a specific subset within a broader niche. For example, rather than selling home decor items, you might specialize in unique, handcrafted lighting fixtures.
2. Don't choose a niche that is too narrow or specialized
On the other hand, it's important not to choose a niche that is too narrow or specialized, as this can limit your customer base and sales potential. For example, while you may be passionate about creating handmade cat costumes, this niche may not be broad enough to support a sustainable business. Instead, consider expanding your niche to include other pet accessories or even branching out into general apparel.
3. Don't choose a niche that doesn't align with your skills or interests
While it's important to consider your customers' needs and interests when choosing a niche, it's also crucial to choose a niche that aligns with your own skills and interests. If you're not passionate about the products you're creating, it will be difficult to maintain the level of quality and creativity needed to stand out on Etsy. Additionally, if you lack the skills needed to create high-quality products in your chosen niche, it may be difficult to establish a loyal customer base.
In conclusion, choosing the right niche is crucial to succeeding on Etsy. Avoiding these three common mistakes can help ensure that your niche is both profitable and sustainable.
