From Air Force to Etsy: How Lisa Transformed Her Passion into a Thriving Business

podcast Jul 20, 2024

In our latest episode of The Crafty Entrepreneur podcast, we had the pleasure of chatting with Lisa, the inspiring owner of Butterfly Crafts. Lisa's journey from serving in the Royal Air Force to becoming a successful Etsy seller is a testament to the power of passion, adaptability, and perseverance.

A Journey of Transformation

Lisa’s story begins with her long and fulfilling career in the Royal Air Force, where she served as a medical administrator for over 23 years. Upon leaving the RAF, Lisa found herself at a crossroads, unsure of what to do next. She decided to take a year off to spend time with her children and explore her creative side.

During this period, Lisa rediscovered her love for crafting. Starting with simple sewing projects, she quickly realised the potential of turning her hobby into a business. She began making fabric items and selling them at local fairs and markets, eventually opening an Etsy shop in 2018.

Adapting to Change

One of the key themes of Lisa’s journey is her ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Initially, she focused on fabric items but later transitioned to laser-engraved wood and slate products, which could be personalised. This shift not only rejuvenated her passion but also opened new avenues for her business.

Investing in the right equipment was crucial. Lisa talks about the importance of choosing the right laser machine that fits her space and needs. Her detailed insights into why she chose specific machines highlight the importance of doing thorough research before making significant business investments.

The Power of Community and Support

Lisa emphasises the importance of community and support in her journey. Her husband played a pivotal role in helping her manage the production side of the business, cutting shapes and preparing materials. This support allowed Lisa to focus on the creative and business aspects, ensuring smooth operations.

She also shares the value of connecting with customers in person, whether at markets or through her previous shop in Cheltenham. These interactions helped her understand her customers' needs better and build a loyal customer base.

Navigating Challenges

The COVID-19 pandemic brought about significant changes, both challenges and opportunities. With markets and shops closed, Lisa doubled down on her Etsy shop, uploading all her products and significantly increasing her sales. She moved from 146 orders in 2019 to an astounding 951 orders in 2020.

However, 2022 brought new challenges with increased competition and changing customer behaviour. Lisa’s honesty about feeling overwhelmed and falling out of love with fabric work is a reminder that every entrepreneur faces hurdles. Her solution was to innovate and introduce new products, such as the hugely popular personalised pocket hugs.

Looking Ahead

2023 has been a year of remarkable growth for Lisa, with over 6,000 orders and a renewed sense of purpose. Her focus now is on expanding her range of laser-engraved items and preparing for the busy holiday season.

Actionable Tip: Start Small, Dream Big

Lisa’s journey offers a powerful lesson: start small, but dream big. Whether you’re just beginning your Etsy journey or looking to pivot and grow, take incremental steps towards your goal. Invest time in understanding your market, engage with your community, and don’t be afraid to innovate.

Final Thoughts

Lisa’s transformation from a career in the RAF to a thriving Etsy business owner is truly inspirational. Her story underscores the importance of adaptability, community support, and continuous learning. As you navigate your own Etsy journey, remember that every challenge is an opportunity to innovate and grow.
