TEE #016 DIY Lightbox: A Budget-Friendly Solution for Etsy Sellers
Jul 08, 2023Read time: 4 minutes
Etsy sellers, we know the importance of high-quality product photos when it comes to driving sales. But did you know that you don't need to break the bank to create eye-catching images that will capture your customers' attention? In this blog post, I'll walk you through how to create your own DIY lightbox, a budget-friendly solution that can dramatically improve your Etsy product photography.
What is a Lightbox and Why is it Important in Product Photography?
A lightbox is a simple device that provides a soft, evenly distributed light for photographing small items. It's particularly useful for Etsy sellers because it can make your products stand out against a clean, professional background, free of any distractions. The right lighting can enhance the details and colours of your items, making them more appealing to potential buyers.
DIY Lightbox: Pros and Cons
A DIY lightbox is a cost-effective solution that allows for great product photography even on a tight budget. It's easy to set up and customizable to your specific needs. However, it may not be as durable or versatile as professional lightboxes. But for many Etsy sellers, the pros far outweigh the cons.
Step-By-Step Guide to Building a DIY Lightbox
Materials You'll Need
A box, white paper or fabric, clear tape, a ruler, a pencil, and a cutting tool.
Cut Out the Sides
Mark and cut out squares on three sides of the box, leaving about an inch of border for stability.
Cover the Sides
Tape the white paper or fabric over the cut-out squares. This will diffuse the light entering the box, creating a soft glow.
Create the Backdrop
Place a piece of white paper or fabric inside the box, creating a smooth curve at the back. This will be your seamless backdrop for photographing items.
Action Steps for Using a DIY Lightbox Effectively
- Position Your Light Source: Place lamps or other light sources on either side of the lightbox to illuminate your product.
- Place Your Product: Position your product inside the lightbox against the seamless backdrop.
- Experiment with Angles: Try shooting your product from different angles to highlight its features and add variety to your Etsy product listings.
By using a DIY lightbox, you can improve the quality of your Etsy product photos, helping your listings stand out in a sea of competitors. So why not give it a try?
Here is my DIY setup, using stiff foam board from Hobbycraft (cost is slightly more than suggestion above) and using my tripod to keep the camera sturdy (super important!) You can use your smart phone for the same effect, be sure to wipe your camera lenses clean!
Image Comparison: With and Without a Lightbox
In the spirit of show-don't-tell, I've included a comparison of product photos taken with and without a lightbox. The difference is clear: the lightbox photo shows the product in a more professional and appealing light.
